Chemical agents are used as weapons of war and terror and the history of their uses points to severe health-related consequences that deserves attention and elimination. Toxic chemicals that have been used as chemical weapons, or have been developed for use as chemical weapons, can be categorized as choking agents, blister agents, blood agents, nerve agents, riot control agents, potential CW agents, mustard agents, psychotomimetic agents, and toxins. The most well known agents are as follows: choking agents—chlorine and phosgene, blister agents (or vesicants)—mustard and lewisite, blood agents—hydrogen cyanide, nerve agents—sarin, soman, VX. From the mustard gas used in World War I to the highly lethal neurotoxin sarin gas that is easily available for use today, chemicals are considered weapons of mass destruction, and their use is condemned by most civilized nations. For our study, we have specifically chosen to focus on two nerve agents- sarin and VX, as well as the somewhat accidental by-product of dioxin in agent orange.
